Hair extension aftercare

Hair extension aftercare guide for all types of hair extensions

Thank you for choosing Crown Perfect to have your Beauty Works extensions fitted! Keep this somewhere safe as this is your hair bible and will tell you all you need to make sure your crown is perfectly maintained!

Now that you’ve completed your consultation you must remember the following between now and your fitting appointment:

  • Not to cut your hair into a blunt cut.
  • Not to colour your hair.
  • Make sure you have the correct aftercare and brushes.

AFTER YOUR FITTING & MAINTENANCE APPOINTMENT DO NOT WASH YOUR HAIR FOR 48HOURS. YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS NEED TIME TO SET.

Our extensions can last many months if cared for correctly. In order for you to maintain healthy hair extensions, we have put together this aftercare guide which contains important information we recommend that you have a read and follow. If you have any further questions then they can be discussed with your stylist at your appointment.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The life span of your hair extensions will depend on the aftercare. We do not guarantee a definitive lifespan on any type of hair extensions as do Beauty Works themselves as they are a natural consumable product. Human hair extensions are made from Remy human hair that is sourced and paid for ethically to create hair extensions. Each pack of hair will never truly have identical characteristics, the lifespan of the hair will vary depending on colour and how it is maintained.

  • We only recommend Beauty works Anti-Yellow shampoo on hair extensions, providing the instructions are followed. Toners & silver shampoos that are overused can affect the lifespan of your hair extensions & are not engined for everyday use. All colour treated hair on extensions is done at your own risk.
  • We do not recommend colour on hair extensions. Any colouring of extensions is done so entirely at your own risk.
  • Light coloured hair extensions will have a shorter lifespan due to the bleach content. Lighter shades will also require more care and less heat application to increase the lifespan of your hair extensions.
  • Using excess heat will reduce their lifespan.
  • Strictly avoid saltwater - it can discolour hair extensions and leave your hair dry. The chlorine content in water will also damage hair extensions, causing matting and discolouration.
  • UV rays will discolour hair extensions.

Tongs, hair irons and heat rollers can be used on your hair extensions with a temperature of up to 180◦c. However, it is advisable not to use them too much as it can cause hair extensions to dry out considerably.

  • Colour can vary slightly from batch to batch due to the characteristics of raw human hair, this is more noticeable in hand coloured balayage, highlighted and mix toned hair extensions.

Maintenance appointments

Hair extensions need regular maintenance appointments as the natural hair can grow up to 1.5 inches within three months. We recommend maintenance appointments every:

  • Tape hair extensions - 6-8 weeks
  • Micro ring hair extensions - 8-12 weeks
  • Weave hair extensions - 6-8 weeks

If maintenance appointments are not kept and the advice above is not followed you can cause damage to the natural hair and hair extensions.

We strongly advise all of our customers to follow these aftercare guidelines. The correct hair maintenance and aftercare is essential to maintain healthy hair extensions. Beauty Works have a Professional haircare range that has been designed to keep them in optimum condition. All products we use in the salon and recommend are sulphate free and suitable for hair extensions.

Washing

When shampooing your hair always make sure to use sulphate free shampoo such as Crown Perfect's Extension Shampoo.

Do not scrub too hard as you do not want any matting, but make sure you wash between the extensions thoroughly.

Let your Crown Perfect Extension Conditioner soak into your hair extensions before rinsing.

When conditioning apply from your ponytail down, avoid the root area and rinse thoroughly.

We recommend using the Beauty Works Argan Oil Mask once per week to maintain the shine and condition of your hair extensions.

Brushing

The extensions are attached to your natural hair (DO NOT forget that ever!!) Start brushing your hair from the bottom of your hair extensions and then slowly move to the top.

Ensure you are using a professional extension brush to avoid breakage and damage to your own hair. Good brushes are:

  • Crown Perfect Boar Bristle Brush
  • Tangle Teezer brush

Sleeping

Never go to sleep with wet hair! Always make sure your hair extensions are completely dry to avoid tangling.

When sleeping, braid your hair extensions to avoid tangling.

Holiday

  • Avoid saltwater and chlorine.
  • Always wear a hat.
  • Use Beauty Works aftersun haircare range to protect your extensions.
  • Avoid getting sun lotions/oils in your hair extensions as this can cause discolouration.
  • Always wash your hair extensions to make sure any product, sand, saltwater, oil is removed at the end of each day.

Common Concerns

‘My hair extensions feel dry’

You must always remember your hair extensions unlike your natural hair do not have a direct supply of nutrients. Therefore, it is absolutely vital that your keep your hair extensions nourished with the correct aftercare products recommended. Also, the overuse of heated appliances can strip the hair of moisture, resulting in the extensions looking and feeling dry.

‘My hair extensions have changed colour’

There are a few reasons why this will have happened:

The chlorine content in water will damage hair extensions, causing matting and discolouration; therefore, it is advised to avoid under water swimming. Blonde hair in particular can turn pink/orange.

UV rays can cause discolouration to your hair extensions; therefore, we advise wearing a hat and using Beauty Works ‘Aftersun’ haircare range to reduce exposure to strong UV rays.

Iron content in water varies depending upon where you live. In certain areas, if you wash your hair extensions in the shower, the iron levels may cause your hair extensions to turn pink or orange in tone. So if possible try to use bottled water to avoid this.

Hard water You may notice that your hair extensions turn dull, dry or the colour fades when you wash them. This is due to the water in certain areas it contains a higher level of alkaline (Hard water).

Hot water can cause the colour to fade. Due to the heat of the water, the cuticles will open and the colour will drain out of the hair shaft. To prevent this, we advise washing your hair in lukewarm water.

Excessive heat from styling tools will change the colour pigment of the hair. The maximum temperature that we recommend to use on hair extensions is 180℃. Excessive heat can cause the extensions to discolour. This is more apparent in blondes and such damage cannot be repaired.

‘My hair extensions are snapping’

Breakage and snapping are common perceived fault and occurs when excessive heat has been applied to the hair. Heat causes damage to the protective outer layer of the hair the ‘cuticle’, which is made up of several layers. Once the cuticle is damaged, the hair will stat to break and snap through the mid-lengths and ends and such damage cannot be repaired.

‘I’ve coloured my hair extensions and they have become dry/damaged’

All permanent tints, some semi-permanent tints, bleach and silver shampoos lift the hair cuticle to penetrate the hair shaft. Once treated in this way to hair has been altered and is therefore not as strong as it was previously.

Any hair that has been coloured is done so at your own risk. The hair extensions cannot be returned once coloured.

‘My hair extensions are knotting’

Knotting itself is not a manufacturing fault. Knotting will occur naturally as hair extensions are a raw product and will behave the same way as natural hair. Excessive knotting can happen with poor maintenance and incorrect aftercare. If you are not rinsing the extensions after washing them, product will build up and will make the hair extensions sticky or waxy and feel or look greasy, this is what causes them to knot.

We hope you have read through our aftercare guide and this has answered any of your questions and concerns. If you have any further questions we can discuss these further at your appointment!
